The joystick has only one (1x) USB port. Stick and Thrust are connected to each other. Ergo, a Thunderbolt <-> USB adapter is certainly necessary if the Macbook does not have a USB slot.

I think the question is rather, does your game support this hardware? If so, then the keys are programmable within the game. The thrust controller would then execute the programmed key or key combination, perhaps when the centre axis is exceeded.
