The pedals are not absolutely necessary, as the rudder functions can be simulated by turning the stick. When landing and especially when braking or steering on the ground, the pedals are an advantage.

First, let explain that I bought this HOTAS for a friend and have not used it myself. Still, per the description and videos (for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch), it provides two methods to control yaw, either by twisting the stick or using the rocker switch on the front of the throttle. You can also connect pedals for added realism, but in that case you should know that HOTAS are mostly used on military planes (DCS World), versus the use of a yoke on civilian planes (FS 2020).
