Kindle readers have a front light:
The light is directed onto the screen surface by small LEDs on the edge of the screen. It therefore shines on the display, similar to a reading lamp from the front. This makes the light appear more natural and is easier on the eyes, especially in the dark.

Smartphones and tablets have backlighting. As the light comes from behind, it is more straining on the eyes.
