Can this NAS be connected directly to a Shield, e.g. via USB?

Probably not, I don't know the Shield.
The Synology only has USB host ports, i.e. you can connect other USB HDDs/sticks etc. to the Synology.
If you mean a firewall with a shield, then yes, but only via the LAN interfaces. NAS can only be accessed via the network connections. If you want to connect a RAID system to a firewall/router/PC via the USB interface, it is best to look for a DAS or external USB hard drives with two HDs that can be operated as a RAID.
