Hello, I would connect the hard disk to a computer and read out the smart data with CrystalDisk. In the programme you can also set the Acoustic Management... called AAM. However, this has a little influence on the access time.

Did you buy a normal 3.5" external hard drive? Manufacturer/model?
If you have a normal hard drive, you could remove it from the enclosure and simply install it in the Synology.
