Can the data also be read into the Garmin Connect app or do I have to buy the Garmin scale for this?

The Health Mate app from Withings can be linked to Myfitnesspal and in Garmin Connect you can then link Myfitnesspal. This works reliably and the weight data is always there immediately. As far as I know, it doesn't work without MFP as an intermediate step.
