Early on, there was a search for an alternative, cost-effective, and as weather-resistant as possible substitute for wooden sleepers. Very good experiences were gained with concrete sleepers, and soon they could be found on many types of tracks, sometimes in combination with wooden and steel sleepers. In modern railways, concrete sleepers have become the standard.
