The irrigation system does not require a special reservoir as it can be operated with a water container such as a bucket or box. The system draws water via the integrated pump from any water container that serves as a reservoir and uses it to supply the plants. The supplied reservoir is therefore not absolutely necessary; you can also use an individual reservoir such as a barrel or box.
