According to Weber, the large 10.5kg gas bottles do not fit in the base cabinet, has anyone tried this? Does it not fit? Can the base plate be modified somewhat?

Not a chance. The 7.5 kg gas bottle just fits in, i.e. it touches the grease collection tray at the top left. The base plate cannot be lowered because everything is screwed together with brackets (btw, really good quality, every screw hole fits exactly).
However, larger gas bottles can be placed on the right side of the grill; there is an outlet hole for the hose.

If that's the way it is according to Weber, then that's the way it is. You don't need to modify anything or make any shortcuts or other guff.
The main thing is to complain after three months that something is broken and that you 'didn't do it'.
