Can I use the rain cover only for the seat without the child? (i.e. when I'm out and about in the rain without the little one).

yes, the poncho can be closed at the "neck" and can therefore cover the entire child seat quite wonderfully. At least that's how it works with the Thule. I always do it that way. I can really recommend the poncho: it's easy to use and can be thrown over quickly. ...
