Does the Kärcher recognise children and does it know how to keep its distance from them, or do you have to mark out a play zone and hope that the children stay in it?

Yes, it recognises children and goes around them, but if it's too disturbed it'll go back and forth unnecessarily and take longer. Otherwise, it's very easy to define exclusion zones.
