Can scanned slides also be saved directly to the PC without a diversion via an SD card?

no - I mean, an SD card is needed to store the images temporarily. They can then be transferred via USB 2.0 (practical if the PC/laptop does not have an SD slot). However, the Reflecta is not recognised as a scanner by the PC via USB and therefore cannot be controlled from the PC.
