The author Erich Loest recounts his life in an unsparing and self-critical manner. Born in Mittweida, Saxony, in 1926, Loest joined the NSDAP via the Hitler Youth and took part in World War II as a young soldier, a so-called "werewolf." In 1947, he enthusiastically joined the SED, but ten years later was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for alleged "counterrevolutionary group formation." This autobiography ends with his release. Read by Kurt Böwe, "Durch die Erde ein Riss" is an impressive literary chronicle of contemporary German history.
