The second case for Max Heller: Dresden 1947: Two years after the end of the war, the city belongs to the Soviet occupation zone and remains a wasteland of rubble. In the biting cold of winter, life is dominated by a shortage of housing, hunger, and disease. Chief Inspector Max Heller is called to a crime scene in the Neustadt district of Dresden by the newly established People's Police. However, before he can begin his investigation, the dead Red Army soldier is already being removed by the military. All that remains is a frozen pool of blood and an abandoned backpack, in which Heller makes a horrifying discovery: the severed head of a man.
