The Myth of Medusa Retold

Was Medusa a monster? Was Perseus a hero? Not in this comic by André Breinbauer. The flip comic tells the well-known myth from the radically different perspectives of both characters: Medusa is not the monster that turns people to stone out of malice. Abused by a god and punished by a goddess, she is a double victim of the gods. Perseus, on the other hand, is still a child and a pawn of the powerful.

What makes this graphic novel special is that it can be read from both sides. In the middle, Medusa and Perseus, along with their stories, intersect. Additionally, a feminist perspective on the myth ensures that the comic fundamentally differs from other interpretations of Medusa. André Breinbauer was a finalist for the 2021 Comic Book Prize of the Berthold Leibinger Foundation with "Medusa and Perseus." In his graphic novel debut, he addresses one of his favorite questions: Who is really the heroine here, and who is the monster?.
