Freed French soldiers take the eleven-year-old boy in and bring him to France. They mean well when they impress upon him that he must not reveal himself as German and must not tell anyone his name. The French are not fond of Germans. He does not forget this warning, even when he encounters people who want to help him. Meanwhile, his parents are searching for him under his real name. They too have survived. And in the end, they will find him, for there is something that identifies him: the prisoner number on his forearm.
