Product details
Born in pre-revolutionary Kiev in 1912 and died in Cologne in 1997, Lev Kopelev was one of the great bridge builders between Russian and German culture. He was a communist, Germanist and front soldier
in the Red Army. As a Gulag prisoner he was friends with Solzhenitsyn, from whom he later became estranged. Kopelev's eventful life reflects the torn apart 20th century. From 1980 he lived in involuntary exile in Germany and became an important figure in the German intellectual life. The close friend of Heinrich Böll and Marion Countess Dönhoff worked tirelessly for understanding and reconciliation between East and West. His autobiographical and scientific work is also oriented to this. Kopelev contributed significantly to the differentiation of the German image of Russia and thus became an interpreter between the nations. Reinhard Meier, who knows him well.
