The Play versions are designed more for video transcoding.
The DS216+II is faster in data throughput when reading and writing.

In addition, the NASes have different CPUs. The 216+II has the more powerful one and has one more USB slot. In addition, the 216+II can manage 10 more network cameras, but it consumes a little more power.
