I can only run wathsapp via app download - I don't need the other Google junk ....

Whatsapp can be found in Huawei's AppGallery and you are redirected to the WhatsApp website. Manual download and installation, then it works as usual. However, you are not informed about WhatsApp updates via the AppGallery.
