Salut mitenand, I want to replace a DS409 and a DS411+ and have so far installed 4x Seagate IronWolf 3.5" hard drives (4TB, SATA III, CMR) from 2020 in the DS409. In the DS411+ I still have older WD RED SATA II 3.5" HD installed (Western Digital WD1002FBY5 from 2010). Can I reuse both? The Synology Compatibilty List for the DS423 is unfortunately useless in this regard, as they probably only want to sell their HAT33xx. Thanks for any advice! Best regards, Dan
Hy
I also have 2 x WD Red from 2010 and 2 additional bodies installed and it works!
Certainly not the optimal solution but it works and that's the important thing ;-)

I have 4 old 4TB from WD in my DS423, which I got from my old Qnap NAS. Everything runs fine. Just give it a try ;-).
As already mentioned, pretty much anything that Linux recognises will work. You only need the compatibility list if you don't have a clean backup strategy :-)
I have an HDD and an SSD in it because I once had to replace an HDD that was failing. Works without any problems. Disks are always mirrored. You may have to reformat the disks and then restore the data via the backup.
Hello,
Synology devices will work with pretty much any disk, as long as you use CMR disks (otherwise you'll have some mean slowness).
I'm using 3 Toshiba disks without any performance issues , and I have an old 1TB random HDD on the fourth bay (to avoid vibration noises while waiting to buy the fourth 8TB) without any problems.
Hope this helps
I have the same game from a DS413 to a DS412. The 2x WD100EFAX (2018) drives I took over from the old system were recognised without any problems. You can only port the data with HyperBackup. The new system cannot read the data on the ported drives. At least that was the case for me.
