My Lenovo T480s (company laptop) doesn't seem to do 3440 on 1440 (but recommends and uses 3840 x 2160). Now I've heard that a USB-C to Display Port cable can help...(https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/fy9pis/t480s_laptop_is_unable_to_output_to_my_ultrawide/) Can anyone confirm this? And, is a 4k cable enough or does it need an 8k?

Clear. As 2nd monitor and also as only one, laptop monitor switched off. 3440x1440 is not displayed in Windows 10 Set up and in Graphics Card Setup.

I don't quite understand the problem...
Is nothing displayed at all?

My screen started flickering/flickering when running at 144Hz, so a new cable provided the solution. Just reported the case to Digitec for DOA and they sent a new cable. Works perfectly again.
In my case I got:
Club 3D DisplayPort cable 1.4 (1m, Display Port)

However, this could also be due to the graphics card.
Have you ever tried to use only the second monitor (Windows + P -> Second monitor only)?
