I have a P8 lite and have never had this problem. We also have a P9, was fully charged (85%) and at -15° on the ski slope in the jacket pocket, it was out of business after a quarter of an hour. So that can certainly be the case.

My P9 has never switched off automatically because of the cold. Of course, it is possible that the device will switch off if you expose it directly to the cold. At low temperatures, the lithium ions in the battery can react too slowly and the device switches off. For this to happen, however, it must be very cold, which would certainly not have been enough this winter in Switzerland.
