Does this monitor support HDMI 2.1? In the description I read something about HDMI 1.4 which would be very old and I can't imagine that this is the case.

It has both an HDMI v1.4 connection and an HDMI v2.0 connection. In addition, of course, DisplayPort 1.2 (according to the manufacturer https://rog.asus.com/ch-de...).
