Could it be that the USB-A ports are not supplying power? When I try to connect my old Apple Superdrive, I get a message to that effect.

Hello, I believe that this device has a special requirement for the connection and therefore cannot be operated on all connections.

according to https://support.apple.com/en-us...
* If your SuperDrive doesn't respond when connected to an external display or USB hub, connect your SuperDrive to a USB port directly on your Mac.
