LWL = TOSLINK is a standardized optical fiber connection system for optical signal transmissions in the range of up to about 20 Mbit/s. It has become widely used for the digital transmission of audio signals in consumer electronics, where it is employed for connections between components such as CD and DVD players and audio amplifiers. It utilizes an optical fiber (POF) made of transparent plastic (PMMA or polycarbonate) with a core diameter of 1 mm. The large diameter allows for the coupling of light emitted from LEDs using a specially shaped focusing lens—laser diodes are not required. POF has a smaller bending radius at the same diameter but higher attenuation than glass optical fibers, which limits the range to about 100 meters, practically around 10 meters. The advantage of an optical fiber connection in audio technology is that it achieves electrical isolation between the device components.
