AVM FRITZ!Box 4040 International
AVM FRITZ!Box 4040 International
I have already had many Fritzboxes. I was always satisfied with them. Now I have a new one, which I can put behind my cable modem at a reasonable price. As always, easy to use and powerful
Pro
Works perfectly with the UPC Connect Box. Simply switch the Connect Box to modem mode (if this is not available, briefly call UPC Support, they will then switch from IPv6 to IPv4, and it will be available again).
I can now also use Dynamic DNS and port forwarding.
Good interface, only to release individual ports I had to search a bit and the instructions did not quite match reality.

After the DHCP server no longer wanted my UPC ConnectBox (no idea why) I put it into bridge mode and installed the FritzBox behind it.
I should have done that much earlier. Much earlier.
The installation was very easy and I had my two NAS, the printer and various tablets, smartphones, laptops and a workstation set up within an hour with all the gimmicks I needed (port releases,...).
The WLAN range is rather limited with concrete walls. If the router had been in a better location, I would have been able to get there with the Fritz!Box alone. Since the cable connections are stupidly located in the corners of the flat, I had to increase the WLAN range with a Fritz!Repeater 1750E. I operate everything as a MESH network. Setup time 2 minutes. Plug in the repeater near the box for the first time, press the WPS button on the repeater and on the box, wait until it has finished setting up (1 minute) and then move the repeater to the planned location and plug it in. Done.
The status LEDs can be switched off in the configuration of both the Box and the Repeater.
My box has the manufacturer part number 2000 2763 so it's not an International, I now realise. No idea what the difference is supposed to be.
Took me hours to install, because the manual was misleading

Works as expected. Unfortunately, a VPN connection directly from the Fritzbox to several VPN providers does not work, such as PureVPN. Currently, approx. 4 other VPN providers are supported with "Fritz!OS 7.39 Beta". However, I have not tested this.

A simple firewall with no frills. Easy to set up, the price is right. Exactly what I was looking for.

Need the WLAN router as a MESH repeater. It actually does that pretty well with its own SSID. Also the setup via the web is simple and self-explanatory. The thing does what it was built for, only the price I find too high. Probably due to the current global shortage of resources.

A good box.

was super easy to add in the existing FRITZ mesh network. After 15 minutes everything was ready to use and the annoying LAN cables were tidied away.

Unpacked, turned on, firmware update done, radio silence set at night, all simple and smooth. I had no problems with it, but the very needy user manual and the English quick start guide are not everyone's cup of tea.

Would recommend it

Ideal complement to a Fritzbox 7530

Although bought new, the WLAN connection via my TP-Link router was sporadically interrupted (embarrassing during video conferences). That's why I decided to spend money again. Now, with this Fritz Box 4040, all problems seem to have disappeared. It was delivered by Digitec express and I was able to set it up in a few minutes including equipment like printer, NAS etc. If anyone is struggling with WLAN quality, I would recommend not to wait any longer, but to order the Fritz Box right away as a replacement.

I also need the device as a mesh master with 2 repeaters. The setup was without any problems.
It also recognized my IP phone so I didn't have to enter a rule for it.
The GUI gives me a nice overview of my LAN.
Pro
Haven't found anything comparable for this price yet.
