Super Mario Galaxy: 5 ½ questions answered by movie star Yoshi

The green dinosaur plays a leading role in the second Super Mario film. Reason enough to ask Yoshi for an interview. At least that’s what happened in my imagination.

I spent two days trying to get him on the phone, that cuddly green guy. It’s hard to believe how busy a little dinosaur can be after becoming a movie star. Finally, he found the time to answer a few questions. So here it is, the first (and probably only) interview with Super Mario movie star Yoshi.

Yoshi, you’re really hard to get hold of. Has Hollywood been calling?

You can’t imagine how much things have kicked off since the trailer for the new Super Mario movie went online. Everyone wants a piece of me. I haven’t even had time to eat. And that’s really bad, as everyone knows I eat all the time. What about Hollywood, you ask? No, thankfully they haven’t been in touch. I much prefer being in the Mushroom Kingdom anyway.

Are you happy about the bigger role you have in the new movie?
Absolutely. I was completely underrepresented in the first movie and only appeared at the very end as a Yoshi egg. That was weird, as I literally play a leading role in the games. It’s a mystery to me how The Super Mario Bros. movie managed to be such a success without me.

Don’t you think you’re talking a bit big? Mario and Luigi are superstars too, after all.

CHOMP!

Yoshi, are you eating while answering my questions?
What? Oh, sorry about that. I was paid entirely in Yoshi berries to make the movie, and they have to be eaten before they go bad.

I see, bon appétit! One last question: the trailer reveals that Toad wasn’t a huge fan of yours at first. How so? You’re buddies in the games, after all.

Oh, it’s all just an act. We just wanted to add some drama to the movie. For the ratings and the laughs, you know. Toad’s a cool guy. In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, he even gets to ride on my back. He’s so wonderfully small and light, unlike Elephant Peach. Oof, I really needed a break after lifting her.

And with this blunt statement, Yoshi rushes off again. He’s a cheeky little one, that’s for sure. And cute. I’m looking forward to 1 April, when the movie hits cinemas. What about you?
