Honor 90 with more megapixels for less money

Honor has unveiled two new smartphones with a 200-megapixel camera. The 90 and the 90 Pro are intended to shake up the upper mid-range.

It was only in November that Honor presented the 80 and 80 Pro. Now the successors 90 and 90 Pro are already in the starting blocks. The fact that the 80 series has not yet officially made it to Europe therefore doesn't matter.

Camera with 200 megapixels for the upper mid-range

Let's first take a look at the Honor 90 Pro, which has been upgraded in terms of battery and camera compared to its predecessor. Despite the "Pro" in the name, the new product is located in the grey area between mid-range and top smartphones - also in terms of price. The device is estimated to cost around 750 francs/euros in Germany.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 with 12 or 16 GB of RAM is used as the processor. In other words, the top chip of the second half of 2022, which is of course still one of the best on the market. The rest of the equipment is also first-class, with a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen, 1224 × 2700 pixel resolution and 120 hertz refresh rate. The brightness of the display is specified with a maximum of 1600 nits - also a top value.

A minimum of 256 GB memory is always included. At 5000 mAh, the battery is the usual size today. It can be charged quickly at 90 watts and should be half full in just 15 minutes. However, you will have to do without wireless charging. Honor has omitted this feature compared to the flagships.

In contrast, the Chinese manufacturer has invested in the camera system: the main camera with an f/1.9 aperture has a resolution of 200 megapixels. There is also a wide-angle lens with 12 megapixels and a 2.5x optical zoom with 32 megapixels. That sounds promising, at least on paper. The same applies to the 50-megapixel selfie camera, which also measures depth with a 2-megapixel sensor.

Slimmed down in terms of processor and camera only

Lots of technology at a low price is the motto of the 90 Pro. And the normal Honor 90 without Pro also tries to score points with these arguments. This variant is likely to cost around 550 francs/euros in our country. And where do you have to make compromises?

First of all, the processor: The Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is a class lower and also slightly older. Nevertheless, there is still 12 or 16 GB of RAM. Honor has also slimmed down the charging speed: the 5000 mAh battery only charges at 66 watts instead of 90 watts.

And there is a third area where savings have been made. Although the Honor 90 fortunately has the same 200-megapixel main camera, it lacks the optical zoom. And the selfie cam with 50 megapixels has to make do without the additional depth measurement.

The normal model is slightly more compact than the Pro and the screen is slightly smaller. Otherwise, however, you can look forward to many identical features: the 120 hertz AMOLED with 1600 nits brightness, for example. Or the minimum 256 GB memory.

All in all, both phones sound promising - the cheaper version is probably the better deal. Some questions such as the protection against water and dust or the actual photo quality are of course still unanswered. The launch date and exact prices for Europe are also still unclear.

And the competition in this price segment is strong. Similar to the Honor 90 Pro, there is a Xiaomi 13 with a better processor, the Google Pixel 7 Pro with an excellent camera system and the Motorola Edge30 Ultra, which received an excellent rating from our Community. The newcomer will have to prove itself first.

Gadgets are my passion - whether you need them for the home office, for the household, for sport and pleasure or for the smart home. Or, of course, for the big hobby next to the family, namely fishing.
