Floating plates? This hack aces the trend in no time

Want to give your home a creative upgrade without messing around with complicated DIY projects? Here’s a hack for showcasing your favourite pieces.
Have you seen perfectly styled walls in home magazines or on Pinterest where plates seem to float weightlessly? You can easily recreate this exact look in your own home – with self-adhesive wall plate holders.
I first saw wall plate holders at Hay House in Copenhagen, where the originals from the UK were used to showcase Emma Kohlmann’s La Pittura collection: The Original Disc Plate Hangers. This solution for unsightly plate wires has been around since 1955 – invisible, secure and easy to remove and adhering to glazed and unglazed surfaces. But there are now alternatives that work just as well.
Why self-adhesive wall plate holders are so practical
- You don’t need tools: just stick one to the back of your plate – done.
- They’re flexible: they work with everything from small dessert plates to large charger plates.
- They’re gentle: a single hole in the wall’s enough; the plates stay intact.
How to turn your plates into wall art
- Choose your plates: combine different designs, colours and sizes. Create contrasts – think modern, minimal plates next to vintage pieces.
- Plan your design: try out different layouts on the floor until everything looks good together.
- Attach the holders: clean the back of the plates, glue the holders onto the centres, then press firmly. Let the glue dry for a few hours.
- Hang your plates: attach the plates to the wall with a nail – that’s it.
- Add more for the wow factor: complement the plates with mirrors, wooden frames or plant hooks to create a personalised gallery wall.
