Can the shaver only be charged in the charging station or can a cable also be plugged in directly? Especially when travelling, I don't want to have to take a charging station with me.

The shaver can also be charged directly with cable only. It is the same cable that feeds the small round charging station. You can unplug it from the charging station (this is not very obvious, by the way) and plug it directly into the shaver. However, fully charged it lasts me two weeks with normal daily use. I would buy it again.
