Can someone explain these fundamentally different assessments to me? Some praise it and don't want to be without it. Others condemn the product.....

I am thrilled! Ideal for daily effortless cleaning. The pulses are quite powerful at the maximum level and rinse the interdental spaces well. I would still use dental brushes or dental floss once a week.

In very complex situations, the water pulses get to tricky spots better than dental floss. But you have to use the product correctly (with the mouth closed, ideally) and yes, the first version broke after a few years. I find the second one better: it has a bigger tank and adjustable multiple pulses.

Basically not badly processed... However, the benefits are small... stubborn residues and a clean result are definitely better achieved with dental floss!
