They have a shaft that you insert into the drilled dowel holes of the first part of your workpiece, while the other side is fitted with a protruding metal spike - you can now use this to mark the correct drilling positions on the complementary workpiece. To do this, push the parts close together and align them correctly. When you now press the boards together, the metal pins of the dowel pins will drill into the wood of the wooden panel positioned opposite and mark the correct drilling position for your subsequent dowel holes.
