To vary the colours, is it possible to choose directly between the HUE application and the bulb, or is the HUE bridge compulsory?

To change the colour with the app you need the Bridge. Otherwise, you need to opt for the Hue BT (Bluetooth) bulbs with which you don't need a bridge.
