To operate the Hue LightStrips you need a Hue Bridge. This is included in the starter kit, i.e. if you only want the LightStrips, you can buy the LightStrips starter kit which already contains a bridge and a LightStrips. But if you want three normal lamps anyway, you can buy the Hue Starter Kit and the LightStrips (without an additional Starter Kit) separately.

With Philips Hue, you only need a starter pack, which includes the Hue Bridge (base station), on which you can connect up to 50 "Friends of Hue" (bulbs, LED strips, etc.).
