Have you checked whether the problem could be Windows? What do you see when you right-click on the speaker in the taskbar and select Spatial Sound?

Since I don't hear any sound when I mute (which is normal for a mute), I assume that your device is working. You are already aware that when something is muted, you can no longer hear anything. That is the meaning of the word mute or am I misunderstanding your question? You can't mute a page and then think that you can still hear something there....
