So how exactly is this thing supposed to work? You can't stream from your mobile phone? Do you have to send everything there via USB-C or can it only connect storage media via USB-C?

Streaming from a device via USB-C only works with devices that support USB-C DisplayPort, and unfortunately these are very few and new. There are video tutorials on the manufacturer's website that show how to connect.
