Does it work on a PC or other OSX device? Either it is defective or incorrectly formatted. Check the hard disk utility to see if it is displayed there. OSX also has a corresponding function with a similar name - it would then be displayed there.

The solution was that you have to push the stick in via the first click/stand. And lo and behold, the stick was recognised.
