The Icy Box IB-377-C31 enclosure for SATA HDD (3.5") is basically compatible with both CMR and SMR HDDs.

After researching on the internet, I can agree with Francesca Corrocher. With educational enclosures, the primary concern is to ensure correct connections to the HDD in use; the control of reading and writing of an HDD is ensured by the circuit board of the HDD itself. The control is logically adapted to the storage system (CMR or SMR) used for the HDD.
