Is the 8TB also SMR? The designation also ends in EFAX. I just had a 6TB head crash. I'd rather buy an 8TB CMR and not use 2TB than try my luck with SMR...

No, the 8TB is not SMR (even with the EFAX in the model name). Only the 2 to 6 TB with EFAX are SMR. Western Digital has meanwhile written a statement on their blog with a table that provides an exact overview: https://blog.westerndigital.com/wd-red-nas...
