Is it compatible with old MacBook Pro models? , i.e. Model 2012. Supposedly I need an adapter to use UBS A sticks on computers and laptops. Is this true?

USB A works in any case. My wife's previous Macbook was bought in 2012, but as a previous year's model it only had USB 2 - much slower.
You will have an outdated MacOS operating system running on the old device. I wouldn't be sure if it supports 1TB sticks, they were a long way off 10 years ago.
Either way, at this price, I would prefer a USB hard drive: if the (built-in) plug of the stick is broken, nothing works. With a hard drive you can change the cable. (I myself have built my own matchbox-sized cloud with it and a NanoPi).

Check which USB port is available on your old MacBook (probably the eternal standard USB A (see, for example, this homepage: https://blog.deinhandy.de/usb-typen-...). USB A ports are usually backwards compatible. The desired PNY Pro Elite should therefore work.
Basically, however, you should consider whether it makes sense to connect a USB stick with 1 TB storage capacity to an old connection with 5MB/sec. data transfer. data transfer. This new USB stick achieves 50 times the speed, but not your old MacBook.
Transferring large amounts of data then takes a very long time via this connection.
