How can the bracelet be shortened ?

The individual hinges can be removed on the side to shorten the bracelet.
A little more precise:
You need an awl with a cylindrical front part to push out the pins and a pair of pliers to pull out the protruding pin. Be careful because of the small sleeve which is stuck at the end of the pin and can fall out if necessary.
