The PCI Express standard is backwards compatible. This means that a card with x4 also fits into one for x8 and x16 slots and then simply uses correspondingly fewer of the lanes available there.

If you put the card in the x16 or x4, the card works perfectly. I have already done this with the x-fi or NIC card.
