If not all 6 ink cartridges are inserted, printing or copying cannot be performed. Ink consumption is optimised depending on the paper used. In my experience, not much unnecessary ink is splashed. Admittedly, the replacement cartridges are not cheap. It is a trade-off between quality and cost.
