Colour depth 8 bit? That can hardly be right, it would be the 1980 standard.

Be careful not to confuse the two. Most monitors today have a colour depth of 6, 8 or 10 bits. As far as I know, the colour depth only defines the number of colours that a single pixel can reproduce. With 8 bits, that would be 256 colours per pixel. So if you look at the whole display, it could reproduce 16.7 million colours.
