Can you simply connect a normal laptop to this monitor or do you need an additional docking station?

Yes, it's totally easy and ingenious to work with the screen - I can only recommend it ....

A docking station should not be necessary unless the laptop does not have a suitable interface. If the laptop has an HDMI or Displayport connection or outputs video via USB-C, the direct connection works.
