Yes, in this case your headphones must have a balanced cable. Balanced cables are cables with a 2.5mm or 4.4mm jack plug. If you don't know what these are, then you almost certainly don't have such a cable. You can't convert 3.5mm jacks to 4.4mm or 2.5mm with an adapter, so try not to use adapters or you'll damage your amp and headphones. You can only use your desired connection type if you know in detail that your headphones have a balanced cable.

You can buy such a cable from most IEMs. For other types of headphones, not all headphones can have such a cable.
