can the cable handle 144hz at 1440p?

I can't try it, but it should, yes. DisplayPort 1.2 delivers 17.28 Gbit/s and 4k@60 requires 12.54 Gbit/s and 1440p@144 requires 14.08Gbit/s. 4k@60 works for me, and if the cable meets the specified specs, it should even be able to handle 1440p@165.
