Can someone explain what the BIOS switch does exactly? The website simply says that one BIOS is made for quiet operation, the other for high performance. At the time of purchase, switching between game and mining was advertised. What does the switch do ? And which position corresponds to what?

...the BIOS switch is for the fan profile of the graphics card.

Hello pgruetter, I assume that the XFX Radeon RX 580 GTS XXX Edition 8 GB is roughly identical in construction to the Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 580 8GB. This switch is also available there. About the position of the DIP switch - ..an instruction leaflet(1) from the original packaging (see link below).

The switch:
a) the PC BIOS apparently recognises a new hardware component as soon as the switch is switched.
b) If Windows is installed - and the switch is subsequently switched again - two things happen. First, the Secure Boot gets "confused" (keyword: new hardware). And secondly, the drivers or the software package of the graphics card should be uninstalled and reinstalled.

No matter which position is set, as soon as two monitors are connected to the card, the VRAM clock rate runs at 2000 Mhz instead of 300 Mhz - and the fan must inevitably rev up.

You could throttle the VRAM down to 1750 Mhz by hand, try to do a little undervolting. Nevertheless, my AMD RX 580 gets hot within seconds and needs intensive cooling as soon as I attach a second screen - the resolution and HDR etc. don't matter.

With the AMDVBFlash(2) (ROM Flasher for the RX 580) and the PolarisBiosEditor(3) I tried to flash the ROM of the card to keep the VRAM clock rate at a constant 1200 Mhz. However, my system did not want to make friends with the new ROM - so I had to clap the original ROM over it again 8-(

Conclusion: For 4K / HDR & DaVinci Resolve, my RX 580 now works with only one monitor in "water-based silent mode". Another monitor is connected to the motherboard graphics card. And I operate two more via a USB-C to HDMI 2.1 adapter with HDR, 4K@60Hz. My motherboard gets a bit warmer for this, but what the heck ;-)
