Apple Homekit is possible, but it's not for beginners, and actually it doesn't bring any additional benefits. I had installed it, but have since turned it off again.

No, at least not directly. But by means of an additional gateway like 'HomeBridge' or 'Openhab', which can be installed on a RaspberryPi, this is possible.
