Yes, the Western Digital Red Plus WD40EFZZ is technically suitable for NAS operation and can be used in a Synology DS214play. The official Synology compatibility list does not name every single WD Red Plus variant, but NAS-optimised WD Red Plus hard drives run reliably in the DS214play in practice.

I switched from a Red Plus 6TB to this one and I haven't noticed a difference. My NAS is in the living room (I'm very careful about the stuff I buy because of that), and I'm happy with the result.

For better performance and for multiple simultaneous accesses to the NAS, I recommend hard drives with more cache, as the larger cache speeds up data processing and offers greater efficiency in the long term. The hard drives with less cache come from a different supplier and are more expensive in this case, as the price is set by the supplier and not by Digitec, as is the case with the products with more cache.

can be connected without any problems. Cache improves read speed. I don't know your raid, but I'm sure you can answer this question yourself. Otherwise, see also "Uwe's" post.

For home use with a few cameras, a Red is certainly sufficient, the Purple only has advantages if many cameras write to the disk and you often evaluate the videos. Both are suitable for continuous operation.

No, the 8TB is not SMR (even with the EFAX in the model name). Only the 2 to 6 TB with EFAX are SMR. Western Digital has meanwhile written a statement on their blog with a table that provides an exact overview: https://blog.westerndigital.com/wd-red-nas...

Good day Hard disks have different characteristics depending on the type; type & year of manufacture, throughput, functions, and ventilation (quiet/loud) and thus different power consumption. The 8TB is also heavier than the 10TB, which speaks for itself. Greetings

I also have an 8TB drive in a Synology and I only hear the normal whirring of the hard drives. I don't hear a noise like the one you describe. I would take a look at the SMART values and otherwise RMA.

Unfortunately, you cannot correct anything here. Error 198 shows you that the hardware has problems that cannot be corrected and you can therefore make a claim under the warranty. The easiest way is to take a screenshot of the SMART overview with the errors (the serial number of the disc should be visible on it), print it out and enclose it with the disc if you want to return it. Normally you will get a replacement immediately.
